2022 Hawaii Computer Science

Professional Development Pre-Summit #CSEverywhere in Hawaii

 
The 2022 Hawaii Computer Science (CS) Professional Development (PD) Pre-Summit is the annual PD event for all Hawaii education-related professionals including but not limited to teachers, counselors, administrators, industry professionals and community partners who teach and/or support CS education. The virtual Pre-Summit event will provide an overview of the state of CS along with a preview of the upcoming CS learning resources and professional development opportunities.  
 
The Pre-Summit event is the prelude to the summer long Hawaii CS PD Summit “Summer of Learning” schedule of CS-related PD sessions that will officially kick-off on April 8, 2022 as part of the STEMworks Hawai’i STEM Conference.
HIDOE Participant Registration & Stipend:
For HIDOE participants:

  • To receive PDE3 non-credit PD hours, register separately on PDE3 (http://pde3.k12.hi.us)

Grade Band Focus: Elementary
 
In this session, faculty from UH Mānoa’s College of Education will facilitate a conversation about culturally-relevant Computer Science and its place in classrooms in Hawai’i. The presenters will share recent research about culturally-relevant pedagogy and emerging ideas about how to make CS lessons and resources more culturally-relevant in a multicultural society. Participants will also learn about professional development opportunities being planned for summer 2022.

Grade Band Focus: High School AP CS
Explore a funding opportunity (with $2000 teacher stipends) for project-based AP Computer Science A curriculum, along with scholarships and stipends for AP CS Principles teachers. This session will (1) explore project-based AP CS curriculum, ongoing teacher support, and professional development opportunities, (2) share grant and scholarship opportunities to fund AP Computer Science at your school, and (3) provide sample lessons and free micro-credentials for K-12 educators interested in CS.

Artificial Intelligence
AI4ALL empowers high school educators of all backgrounds to bring AI (Artificial Intelligence) education to their communities. AI4ALL offers free curriculum, teacher resources, and professional development to ensure educators have access to all the tools they need to begin teaching AI literacy. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, focuses on ethics and social impact, and is approachable to people without AI, math, or computer science backgrounds. It gives students a broad understanding of what AI is, how it works, how it interacts with their lives, and how they can work with AI in their futures.

Breakout Session 1F: Learn to Code in 10 minutes using Altino Virtual Car
Grade Band Focus: All Grades
Brief Session Description: Launched in Hawaii in 2017 as a PDE3 for teachers, Altino teachers and Altino cars can be found in almost every complex area statewide today. The Altino system and cars which were invented by a PhD in robotics from Korea, but has been adapted so teachers can earn 3 PD credits, is www.Arduino.cc, python, and SCRATCH compatible, and cars can be programmed to drive autonomously like a Tesla!  Altino is used by elementary to University students around the world. So come and learn to code in 10 minutes using our new virtual car, and learn what is Altino and what it is not, and where it can add fun, creativity and engagement in your classroom.

As the Hawai‘i Regional Partner for the Code.org Teacher Professional Learning Program, STEMworks offers quality Code.org PD opportunities for all Hawai‘i educators, no previous experience teaching CS needed!

Learn about the different functions of Spreadsheets and how it can be helpful to you and your students. Include CS standards in your content areas. Breakout Session 2D: Quantum Computing for Hawaii
Grade Band Focus: High School
Quantum computing is an emerging technology that could change the world, and we want your high school students to learn about it next year! As a leading STEM education nonprofit, we offer a free Introduction to Quantum Computing course designed specifically for high school students. The only prerequisite is geometry. The course is online and taught by Qubit by Qubit’s instructors from leading universities. Students will learn foundational quantum computing skills, run code on a real quantum computer, and hear from leading academic and industry experts. This is a course appropriate for an Introduction to Computer Science course offering or alternative. Attend this information session to learn more about how to offer this course to your students for free next year.

Breakout Session 2E: Cybersecurity with Cyber.org Overview

Information Technology & Digital Transformation Programs of Study (POS):
Cybersecurity
In this session, you will hear from CYBER.ORG's content developer's on how you can implement Cybersecurity into any K-12 classroom with CYBER.ORG's free resources. During this session, attendees will experience several of the cyber-based courses such as Cybersecurity, STEM: Explore, Discover, Apply, and Cyber Literacy. Attendees will gain access to the 16+ courses, each having 180+ hours of modular-based content at the elementary, middle, and high school level. The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and CYBER.ORG have partnered to create the “Cyber Interstate” – a multi-faceted pathway/pipeline for students who are interested in a Cybersecurity or STEM degree and career field. The Cyber Interstate is an ecosystem that brings together K-12, Higher Ed, Industry, and Government to provide a regional solution for teachers to teacher cyber in the classroom. This session will showcase all of the resources that are available to educators through this partnership.

Breakout Session 2F: ICSpark and the Student-Driven Technology Classroom: A 2-Year Case Study

ICSpark is a Registered Independent Organization at the University of Hawaii at Manoa founded in 2019 to provide free coding classes to 6th - 12th graders. All sessions are lead by undergraduate Computer Science students. In this session, we discuss the ICSpark experience of teaching coding in a “peer-to-peer” classroom environment, course structure, pedagogical techniques, successes and pitfalls, and outcomes.

Dr. Mahdi Belcaid
Assistant Researcher - Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology

Dr. Belcaid received his M.Sc. in Computer Science the University of Quebec at Montreal and his Ph.D. in Computer Science UH Manoa. He is currently an Assistant Research Professor at UH Manoa with a joint appointment in Information & Computer Sciences and the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Dr. Belcaid works principally on biological (genetic or otherwise) big data and probabilistic algorithms for modeling complex systems interactions. Dr. Belcaid is the Executive Director of the Hawaii Data Science Institute.

Manu Mei-Singh is a polymath creative technologist and educator. He has dipped his fingers and toes into a variety of fields and knowledge pools; these experiences are then used to homespun, refine and create curriculum, pedagogy and courses that present what the future of CS education could be.

Gina Watanabe is the founder of Technology Outreach Hawaii (TORCH), a 501c3 non-profit organization that aims to leverage the power of youth to promote technology education, mentorship, collaboration, and service across Hawaii. Prior to TORCH, Gina was a web development instructor at Jr. DevLeague Academy and later established ICSpark, a Registered Independent Organization at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to provide free coding classes for 6th to 12th grade students and train college student CS mentors. Her passion for technology and health has led her to medical school where she continues to integrate technology into her current research projects.

Dr. Dan Hoffman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Learning Design & Technology, University of Hawaii at Mānoa. He is a passionate educator and researcher in the field of digital learning. He is a former K-12 teacher researching interactive experiences and their impact on learning and engagement. Previous experiences include working as a data analyst at Kamehameha Schools, participating in the New York City Teaching Fellows program, and designing software for Intel and the Games for Learning Institute. He's currently the coordinator for AECT’s International Division’s Professional Development Committee, as well as an Associate Editor for the IAFOR Journal of Education’s special issues on Technology in Education. He was born in Vermont and enjoys building computers, watching movies, and listening to podcasts.

Dr. Peter Leong is an Associate Professor with the Department of Learning Design & Technology, University of Hawaii-Manoa. He has extensive experience in the development and delivery of online courses and distance education. Dr. Leong was honored as one of Hawaii’s 2007 top high-technology leaders and was recognized with the University of Hawaii Board of Regents’ Medal for Teaching Excellence award in 2012. He was a co-investigator on a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to evaluate new approaches to improving engagement, diversity, and retention in undergraduate computer science and currently serves as a co-investigator of a Computer Science for All NSF grant focused on culturally-relevant computing . His research interests include culturally-relevant computing, student satisfaction with online learning, faculty support for technology integration, technologies for distance education and teaching & learning in virtual worlds.

Dr. Seungoh Paek, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Learning Design & Technology (LTEC), University of Hawaii at Mānoa. She earned her doctorate in instructional technology and media at Teachers College Columbia University. She also holds Master’s degrees in Education and Applied Statistics. Dr. Paek’s research focuses on the design and development of interactive media and their impact on cognitive development and learning. She’s particularly interested in the ways in which digital environment design influences how learners engage—cognitively and behaviorally—with to-be-learned content.

Rochelle Hussey Piʻilani Kaʻaloa is an Assistant Specialist faculty in the UH-Mānoa Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies. She has teaching experiences at UH-Mānoa College of Education and Hawaiian Studies, Epiphany Elementary School, the Electronic Collaboration Educational Learning Laboratory, and Nā Pua Noʻeau: The Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children. Her teaching has focused on the integration of technology into language arts, science, and mathematics curricula and Hawaiian Studies resource management. She has strong ties through her work in Native Hawaiian serving education programs and an established research agenda in the area of Native Hawaiian education, particularly in understanding the influences of cultural beliefs in technology integration of higher education faculty in their teaching.

Sara Shreve is the Business Development Manager for the 13 states on the West Coast of the Cisco Networking Academy program (NetAcad). She also supports three national programs, Civil Air Patrol, AFA CyberPatriot, & US-Federal HUD. 
 
Sara is based in Portland, Oregon and enjoys working remotely helping make a difference in educators and students lives. She has worked at Cisco since 2007.

Cindy Takara
Teacher - Waipahu High School

Cindy has taught at Waipahu High School for over 26 years.  She began her teaching career in Business but slowly transitioned to Computer Science over the past 24 years. Established the Academy of Information Technology in 2005 under the National Academy Foundation, the first one in the state of Hawaii which later became a National IET Academy under NCAC in 2020. Cindy also introduced coding/programming and cyber security courses to Waipahu High School between 2015-2018 and was part of the first cohort of business and science teachers who were trained at Honolulu Community College in order to establish one of the  first CISCO Networking Academies in various high schools across the state. She currently teaches CISCO I and II, A+ IT Essentials I and II, Coding I and II, AP Computer Science Principles, and IT Core Foundations. Cindy holds certifications in networking- CCNA, A+ IT Essentials, and Cyber Ops.

Dr. Chuck Gardner
Assistant Program Manager - Qubit by Qubit

Chuck Gardner serves as Director of Curriculum for the Cyber Innovation Center and its academic initiative, CYBER.ORG. He has over 10 years of classroom experience and holds an EdD (Educational Leadership) and an MBA (Marketing) from the University of Phoenix and a BS (Marine Transportation) from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. After leaving the maritime industry in 2006 he became a career-changing educator, first teaching algebra and geometry in middle school, then moving to a high school robotics and cyber classroom, where he first encountered CYBER.ORG and wrote content for them. As the director of curriculum, he now oversees a team of content authors and subject matter experts and helps deliver professional development workshops to teachers from across the country.
