Hawaii K-12 Computer Science Education:

Equity & Inclusion

 
The 2021 Hawaii Computer Science (CS) Professional Development (PD) Pre-Summit is the inaugural PD event for all Hawaii education-related professionals including but not limited to teachers, counselors, administrators, industry professionals and community partners who teach and/or support CS education. The virtual Pre-Summit event will provide an overview about equity and inclusion in CS education as well as CS resources for teaching, inspiring and advocacy.
 
The Pre-Summit event is the prelude to the summer long “Summit” schedule of CS-related PD sessions that will officially kick-off on April 28th as part of the STEMworks Hawai’i STEM Conference.

A panel discussion on the critical issues with equity & inclusion in CS education opportunities and overcoming obstacles as a student, teacher and/or CS community stakeholder.

Session 1: Equity & Inclusion in Hawaii CS Education Overview

 

Computer science education for all students focuses on providing equitable and inclusive learning opportunities. Through discussion and dramatics, this session will provide an overview of the basic concepts and practices on what CS classrooms look and sound like.

Breakout Session 2: Inclusive CS Practices for Elementary & Breakout Session 3: Inclusive CS Practices for Secondary
There are a wide variety of resources and strategies to create and promote inclusive CS learning classrooms. This “unconference” style session will be a facilitated open discussion on resources and examples how CS is taught, how students are recruited and how the classroom supports diverse learners and promotes retention.

Jodie Yim

Jodie Yim is the ‘Ao Kahi Coordinator at Windward Community College, responsible for a Native Hawaiian Career and Technical Education project supporting students starting their cybersecurity career.  Sponsored by ALU LIKE, Inc. and funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the ‘Ao Kahi project is in its third year expanding free opportunities for Native Hawaiian students to obtain recognized postsecondary credentials and hands-on learning in Information and Computer Science (ICS), specifically in cybersecurity.  ‘Ao Kahi, meaning “Growing Truth and Light”, has paved the way for those in high school and for adults, seeking a career in the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals.  Like gaming?  Come play in the real world.

Kiane Kanaha

Originally from Waimanalo on Oʻahu I made the decision to move to Kamuela in Hawaiʻi island to pursue my dreams of teaching. At the moment I am the Special Education teacher at Kanu o ka ʻĀina in Kamuela and secondary kumu at Purple Maiʻa. I received my Masters in Education dual certificate in Social Studies and Special Education through U.H. Manoaʻs online College of Education. I believe in constantly learning and growing to make ourselves better educators!

Richard Enright

Richard Enright is the engineering teacher at Nanakuli Intermediate and High School (NIHS), is the CTE (Career, Technology Education) Coordinator at NIHS, and has coached the school's robotics team for several years. He has taken his students to numerous tournaments and has presented at numerous conferences.
